Looks like Sumitomo waitied to see if their side kick Mr Sasako could stop Axiom with the bad publicity, and cause that didnt work now they are trying to use their corporate power.
I guess when theres a proposed 60 billion of nickel they want to go down fighting, at the end of the day its been approved by the past and new minister for minerals and mines and two landowners (im guessing tribe leaders) as Axiom directors is enough to keep it secure...
