Quite true and from one who has been there and back, I am intrigued that some will continue to look for the next best thing, never fully appreciating what a gift they already have with SAS. I certainly don’t suggest one egg in one big basket, but a collection of them can complicate things needlessly IMO. I reckon if you have more than 5 x stocks on your watch list, you are doing none of them full justice – many I am sure will beg to differ.

Some pick-ups from the meeting not yet mentioned by others…………………………..

Launch date yet to be confirmed by ISRO but it is now looking like early May. While they wait, software fine tuning continues in the GOMSpace clean room where the 3D’s await their journey to India.

Virgin will also be a commercial customer as they want to enable all their aircraft comms to provide passengers with connectivity. Best I can see, Virgin has a total fleet number of about 230 aircraft. – (see below for breakdown)

SAS can provide savings of up to 80% of current satellite charges from the likes of Iridium Next and Inmarsat. If I were a shareholder in either, or other similar satellite provider, I’d be dumping my stock big time and getting into SAS! 80% saving on a $2/min Iridium call = $1.60/min saving. We could be talking a wholesale SAS price to a provider of 10 – 20c/min.

The ‘polar orbit’ of the 3D’s allows SAS not only the opportunity to check and validate the operation of the nanosats, it allows them time to plan and program for the added intricacies of extending the constellation above and below the +/- 15⁰ equatorial band to ultimately provide complete global coverage - some 1,000" nanosats.

Meir also indicated that if a potential customer with enough money wanted to pay to have a service provided outside the +/- 15⁰ equatorial band , then that was also possible. That suggests to me that it is possible to have a dedicated cover for the greater Indian area and also cover for China, both of which are above the current equatorial bounds and holds the greater % of global ‘unconnected’ population.

Meir is the first to admit his need to be ultra conservative when talking ‘numbers’ simply to remain in the reasonably accepted norm. So try this……………. Meir suggested that connecting and additional 3billion who currently have no means of communication, is totally unrealistic. He went so far as to reduce the 3billion down to 1/3000^th… i.e. just 1,000,000 new connected users. AND based on voice only – not including data, he suggested a return of $10/month – that is 1,000,000 x $10 x 12months = $120, 000, 000 per year. YES – 1/3000^th of a potential market which is also only a fraction of the other income generating possibilities enabled by these nanosatellites.

If he is too conservative and manages to get 1/300^th of a potential market, SAS will be a $1.2billion+ / year company. I find it hard not to get excited about even significantly conservative numbers.

IP is something that these guys hold very close to themselves. They may well have certain aspects of their system that is currently being patented. My experience with patents is that they often serve as a guide to anyone who wants to copy and thereby reproduce another way to get a very similar if not identical result. The end is often a bun fight between the opposing legal teams that ultimately cost both parties a lot of money. The cost of going through the (global) patenting process can be horrendously expensive and take a very long time. Personally I hope they simply keep their IP very closely held with their small network and don’t bother about exposing it to the world in great detail in a patented format. Get in and do it - let the other follow IF they can. Being first in this race makes it a whole lot more difficult for the next guy!
