No couple pensions? So, two married people who share - gas, electricity, water, council rates, food charges (shopping for two is cheaper per person than for one), possibly car expenses, fixed and variable (one car between two), insurances of household possessions, garden maintenance expenses, etc etc etc. The adage "two can live as cheaply as one" although not entirely true, certainly has a lot of truth in it. To pay two people living as a couple the same pension as a single person would be entirely and utterly unfair. As indeed has been preceived by economists involved in calculating the appropriateness of the variations in aged pensions entitlements.
