Have to agree with your sentiment pinto.
As a small (non-profitable as yet!) miner, we pay a royalty to the QLD Govt on every tonne we mine. This royalty has trippled in the last year without a please, thankyou or any warning whatsoever.
A tax on profit would be a much fairer approach since we have to pay the royalty even if we make no profit.
I have no problem with paying such a tax. I can even see the argument that miners should pay more than just the standard rate of tax because they are digging up and selling something that belongs to the whole nation. Something that once sold is gone for ever.
Rudd's problem in all of this seems to be that he has not really thought through the implementation of the tax. Once again, he seems to have gone off half cocked and it appears that we will have a similar mess to the ET scheme. A little more thought in the context of genuine tax reform might have produced a better result.
