I had an employer that owed me super contributions a couple of years back. Not a great deal, around $5-6K. Filled out the appropriate forms for the ATO and submitted. They went through their process dealing with said previous employer and kept me informed as to their progress.
Checks started turning up in the mail occasionly from the ATO and over a period of about twelve months amounted to more than I had claimed was owed. Followed by a letter saying the matter was now closed.
I guess it was easier to deal with as it was my SMSF rather than an industry super.
