well of course no one thinks anyone could give a damn when they ask how are you? it's just being polite. Leave it at that level, they've obviously been TOLD to ask 'how's your day been?' by some jumped up customer relations arsehole who thinks it's cute to ask a stupid question.
and yeah, I talk to the cashiers when it's appropriate, I'm not past bullshitting a little myself....
