From one article I saw:
"ANZ and Merrill may be able to recoup the funds they have advanced (ANZ is believed to be into Opes for $650 million, and Merrill for about $350 million) by selling shares in the portfolio, but it is unclear at this stage whether a sell-down will generate anything on top of that for leveraged Opes clients.
The firm was an active trader in some of the high-profile casualties of the market slump, including ABC Learning, Challenger, Allco and Centro, and about half the $1 billion-plus portfolio consists of small capitalisation shares that trade thinly, and will dive if there is selling pressure - as there appeared to be yesterday in several small-cap stocks."
