twoup: I would not wager my left testicle on your statement

"Further - I guarantee you that no one will invest millions into hydrogen refinery infrastructure and ONLY operate is when there is excess power available in the grid. This can only become "economically viable" with enormous subsidies."

    If I was you.

At the current time it is cost effective for everyone to install solar panels on their roofs. This is not likely to change in the short or near term.
The result, even now, is that there are times in which too much energy is being put into the grid and the wholesale price goes negative i.e
someone will pay you to take and use this excess power

Now, lets take electrolysers. My thinking is that these are pretty simple and relatively cheap devices and even now, it may be cost effective
to buy one and run it for a few hours per day - more so if the electricity to run it is free.
