Why is pumped hydro so much more efficient?
Because you never change state, and you never change your storage media.
Those inefficiencies compound extremely quickly.
The only thing that changes with pumped hydro is physical location.
We just add and subtract gravitational potential energy.
You do get storage losses due to evaporation - but this is offset by rainfall, which increases efficiency, and it's free.
