I think it was an ex-fairfax journo who now works at crikey did a talk on the dailies but in particular to a fairfax owned paper and made some reference to the top hitting stories on their websites for a particular year, and he found the most popular to be something to do with paris hilton's raunchy tapes and britney spears of much the same.

Unfortunately times are tough for these groups at present,with declines in paper sales and the digital revolution taking audience, although I can't say I agree with the job cuts, but on the flip-side I see it as a necessary evil for whats to come, and that is a consolidation of the industry.

On the journo's themselves unfortunately if it aint rude or crude then the editor's will simply not publish it which means no bacon, it is the name of their game. In this instance I say hate the game not the player IMO.
