Surat Basin to play important role

AS 400 frustrated farmers gathered in the west, some of the biggest resource industry players from the Surat Basin met in the east.

The third Surat Basin Coal and Energy Conference began at the Marriott Hotel in Brisbane yesterday and will play host to executives from some of the biggest companies in the region.

Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Minister Stephen Robertson delivered the keynote address, while representatives from Xstrata Coal, Linc Energy, Cougar Energy, the Queensland Resources Council and the Surat Basin Corporation were amongst the other speakers.

Mr Robertson said that over the next 10 years, the Surat Basin would play an important role in the supply of energy and to the prosperity of Queensland.

The CSG and LNG are important industries which have significant potential to create jobs and investment in Queensland, Mr Robertson said.

The Queensland Government is determined to ensure that these industries are sustainable and they balance the rights of landholders and the environment with the potential for economic development.
