More gas supply needed to ease price crunch: Marles

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles says Australia must shore up gas supplies to bring down prices, appearing at odds with Industry Minister Ed Husic who has blamed gas producers’ greed and not a supply shortage for the crisis.
Husic on Thursday blamed “a glut of greed” for rising gas prices that continued to rise despite an agreement signed in September with gas companies to prevent a shortfall.
On Friday, Marles suggested Australia had to work to get more gas in the domestic system.
“There is a way to go and we’re open-minded about what steps we can take here,” Marles said.
“We need to be making sure that there is adequate supply which is putting a downward pressure on gas prices. We’re working with gas companies to achieve that.”
The deputy prime minister rejected the Greens’ demand for a windfall tax on coal and gas companies, saying this would not help bring down prices.
“This is in part a question of global energy markets being significantly disrupted by the war in Ukraine. But in part, it is about a decade of inaction which we’re trying to remedy and you can’t remedy that overnight.”
