There is a company called binacor(?) that has designed a implantable device, with 2 motors, for the left and right ventricle. It has a veriable speed design as well. I am thinking this is the way Ventracor is heading. Though with the LVD as the first stage to get some cash flow going, and confirming issues such as cables, stability etc... I think it was at the cusp of getting this done. The issue is that they did not road map it out to the share holders adequately enough and continuosly enough to build support.
