Stocky old chap,
horizontal fractures open up permeability along the reservoir, which then allows the oil to flow from clear across the field extent. which may be measured in kms. vertical fractures open up permeability vertically through the reservoir which may be only tens of meters thick. they also provide horizontal permeability, but not to nearly the same aggregate extent. very much prefer horizontals.
