I believe investment funds whose purpose is hold only ASX200 listed companies in particular investment portfolio's, have to buy all stocks in the top 200 at their predetermined percentages.
To gain an income while holding, they then also lend their stocks out to those that wish to short them.
So not necessarily the ‘evil’ instos shorting a top 200 stock…just anyone that wishes to borrow the stocks from said investment funds…
