The states do NOT have a solid enough revenue base to provide the basic services and infrastructure that are necessary.
3 things are making this worse:
- lower commodity prices,
- higher AUD
and
- ageing population.
Further, Queensland has had massive expenditures from natural disasters.
How much of this is within our control?
Arguing about deficits and spending is at the margin of these huge fundamental structural issues.
Now that good times are largely over, the system wasteful, duplicative system is under even more pressure.
Dressing the issue up as much austerity (good) vs spending (bad) is not dealing with these underlying structural problems.
