Treasurer Wayne Swan said it was clear plans to hike the GST were ``very squarely on the agenda'' for the coalition.
"He said calls to broaden the GST base to cover food would be '`terribly unfair'', and hit the living standards of low and middle-income earners in Australia.
"The Labor Party ... would never favour increasing the rate or the base of the GST as many Liberals are now talking about,'' he said.
