THE man charged with bringing inflation under control has advised shoppers to look around for bargains and to buy bread in bulk and freeze it.

Treasurer Wayne Swan was yesterday lambasted in Parliament over a series of tips he gave to constituents on dealing with rising grocery prices.

The tips on his website include shopping around for specials, asking store managers to meet competitors' prices and shopping during quiet times.

Mr Swan yesterday said the Opposition was "terminally out of touch" for criticising the suggestions contained in his electorate newsletter.

"We do understand that at the end of the week a lot of people have trouble paying the bills," he said. "We absolutely understand why they need to shop for specials."

Deputy Opposition Leader Julie Bishop accused the Government of breaking an election promise to halt rocketing grocery prices.

"If that is the Government's answer to the challenge of keeping grocery prices down, then it's patronising in the extreme," Ms Bishop said.

Retailers Association executive director Scott Driscoll said Mr Swan had insulted shoppers' intelligence.

    Mr Swan's top 10 tips:

    1. Shop around

    2. Shop for specials

    3. Compare all brands

    4. Compare prices per unit

    5. Check the weight

    6. Check your docket

    7. Ask for items not on shelves

    8. Challenge store managers

    9. Shop during quiet periods

    10. Keep an eye on Pricewatch figures and keep your dockets
