SGU emphasizes the importance of sustainable minerals and raw materials for a sustainable value chain for batteriesIn July 2020, the Government commissioned the Swedish Geological Survey (SGU), the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency to collaborate on Sweden's parts of the EU's value chain for batteries. The goal of the EU is to make Europe self-sufficient in batteries with the least possible ecological footprint.
Within the government assignment, the authorities have analyzed the action proposals in Fossil-free Sweden's battery strategy, something that was partially reported in February. It states that the supply of raw materials is a challenge "that requires the development of more sustainable mines and a dramatically increased degree of recycling of battery metals". The authorities within the "battery assignment" share that assessment. New minerals and raw materials are necessary for the battery value chain and they need to be mined in a sustainable way.-
SGU's assessment is that a future coherent mineral strategy is central to the success of Sweden's contribution to a European battery value chain and the Swedish battery strategy. Efforts are also needed in terms of development aid and development cooperation to strengthen certain other countries where mining is located, says Erika Ingvald, unit manager at SGU
The pressure is building...industry are crying out and the government and it's agencies are looking very closely at the opportunity and roadblocks to Sweden becoming a leader in sustainable raw materials for the battery supply chain...the tide is turning...
