Sweden is the second worst in the world when it comes to environmental permits, according to a new survey by Mining Journal.Project after project comes to a standstill.We must act before it is too late, says Maria Sunér, CEO of Svemin."Sweden is perceived as almost legally uncertain," she tells TN.
The Swedish mining industry is facing a crossroads.Either Sweden takes the lead in climate change or mining companies and investments gradually leave Sweden.Maria Sunér, CEO of Svemin, the industry organization for mines, mineral and metal producers in Sweden, points out the country's environmental permit processes as the big issue.
After Cementa's permit chaos focused on the issue, a number of mining and industrial projects have had their environmental permits rejected.Apart from Kaunis Iron's announcement of continued operations, a number of projects have encountered patrols recently.The newspaper Näringslivet has reported on, among other things, SMA Mineral which refused to expand lime mining on Gotland, on Ragn-Sell's climate innovation which is stopped despite major environmental gains, Boliden's fight for a copper mine in Laver and the rejection of LKAB's permit application which could have triggered a national iron ore crisis.
Second worst in the world
Maria Sunér, however, sees opportunities ahead, even though she states that the reality is not so bright right now.The situation is "bad" when it comes to permit processes.The newspaper Mining Journal recently ranked the world's mining countries and when it comes to environmental permits, Sweden ends up far down the list.

- We are second to last of all countries.And when it comes to how reliable the policy is, we are also in a very bad position.From an international perspective, Sweden is perceived as a very uncertain country for mining-related investments.Because the permit processes take so long and the outcome of mining cases is very uncertain, Sweden is perceived as almost legally uncertain, she says.
- A lot depends on how politicians react to the investments, how individual administrators act and who "happens to".It can not be considered legally certain in a country that still has quite a high tail in these matters.So we have a problem that needs to be addressed, she continues.

In addition, information is soon expected from the government about a possible iron ore mine in Kallak outside Jokkmokk.The company Beowolf Mining's permit case has been dragged on a long stretch and the process has already cost large sums.

Companies are taking steps forward in climate thinking. Boliden, for example, has northern Europe's largest recycling facility for electronic scrap, and LKAB plans to extract more minerals from its residual products.

- We see that there are great synergies between primary and secondary raw material flows and knowledge in the industry can be developed even more in the future.
