    Head,

It sounds like you have fairly serious chronic gout from your description.

Caused by a build up of uric acid in the joints which causes the redness, swelling and pain.

Can cause problems with uric acid crystals depositing in and damaging kidneys.

    You need to treat it.
    This is important.
Strongly recommend you seek medical advice.

As others have mentioned a single daily dose of Allopurinol keeps it under control for the most part. ( only available on prescription)
Usual dose 300mg, but as little as 100mg may do the trick.

Non steroidal anti imflamatoriy drugs,(NSAIDS), used to treat chronic attacks these days. Hanrahan mentioned one, but there are many available.
He is correct, NSAIDS not good used routinely long term, but are usually fine for short term use ( with some exceptions).

Prior to the NSAIDS, for acute attacks, the drug of choise was Colchicine which is still very quick and effective in providing relief, but not without side effects

Now, make that appointment to see your Dr !

    Cheers,

    Bendigo
