Staying off topic (cows) : Those students were being pretty stupid. They were looking only at one side of the equation. That methane that came out of the cows had to originally get into the cows which it did by the cows eating. The food that the cows ate was originally plants, and those plants got their carbon (the part of the methane that is of concern to certain people) from the atmosphere by taking in CO2. After the methane has been released by the cows, from either end it matters not, it quickly oxidises into CO2 and H2O, and the cycle starts again. In other words, methane released by cows is simply part of a zero net cycle. In the long run, it has no effect on anything. Except that we get better food of course, and then we breathe out and fart too.
