The driving idea behind population growth is that you can bulldoze otherwise worthless land and stick up housing estates on it. But the profits derived are offset by infrastructure costs, paid for by taxpayers. So the industry is consequently parasitic. And the population increase will degrade living standards in a country dependant on primary production. The immigration fuelled trade deficit is an example of this.

Howard's great plan of cutting back on services and education and pilfering skilled workers from the rest of the world has serious technical flaws, as well as being morally bereft.
