Satellite's technical superiority over aerial is a no-brainer, I don't think the debate should be focused on their technical merits along.
Over time, I have no doubt that satellite will get cheap enough so when someone requests for a Sydney storm fly over, it's just a button click away. But are we there yet? No, hence business opportunity for Nearmap to fill in the gap in the mean time.
OK, so we all know sooner or later aerial will be superseded by more advanced and automated solutions. Can Nearmap adapt? I think so.
If you read the About Us page on http://au.nearmap.com/about, all they talk about is mapping technology and this is their root. But if you read their most recent presentation dated 20 Apr 2015, the emphasis is that
Nearmap is a visual analytics company.
As long as Nearmap stays agile, keeps their cost low and focus on value-add business opportunities, I am a happy long term holder.
