Sydney Water carrying out a smart metering trial in the northern area of Westleigh. The innovative trial uses state of the art technology to help us identify leaks in our network and in customers' homes. It will also help us understand our customers' water use.

As part of the trial, we will be installing small devices called data loggers on residential water meters. These allow us to record water use without having to physically read the meter.

As well as the data loggers, 250 customers will also have an opportunity to trial in-house displays. These displays allow customers to monitor water use in real time and notify them of household leaks.

Westleigh has been chosen because of the unique way that Sydney Water is able to measure how much water goes in and out of the area.

The results of the trial will be used to assess whether smart metering helps us to be more water and cost efficient.

Trial of water meters for new apartments and units
As part of the water conservation campaign and enabling customers to monitor and manage their own consumption, Sydney Water is trialling the adoption of sophisticated technologies and methods to measure the water being used in new apartments and units.

One trial has each unit's water meter connected to a data logger, which can send usage information via General Packet Radio System (GPRS) technology to Sydney Water.

Sydney Water would then be able to send individual water usage bills for each unit.

Having their own water meter would provide several benefits to residents of units, allowing them to monitor their own use and in turn encourage further water savings.

Sydney services over 1.7 mil homes & businesses.
