Sydney's water supply is in all sorts of trouble at the moment. The desalination plant has been badly damaged by a tornado and the southern catchment area has been badly damaged by coal mining.
Previously, I have posted that the Illawarra escarpment and the three reservoirs on the plateau above would seem to be an ideal location for wave desalination and pumped storage.
All the components for pumped storage are already in place: ocean, oceanside mine shafts for storage, waves, solar and wind, elevated water reservoirs, desperate water and energy problems.

By allowing coal mining to continue in such a environmentally sensitive area makes no sense IMO. It is time they started to repair some of the damage incurred over the last 130+ years.
"Environmental groups say the Baird government is "playing Russian roulette" in Sydney's water catchment by approving coal mining without a full understanding of its impacts, taking a "damage first, fix later" approach."
