I am currently in the process of working out a series of backyard upgrades for one of my rentals to smarten it up a bit and get rid of the weed jungle. I have pretty much decided on laying weed mat down with a combination of pebbled and bark chip areas to keep the maintenance down. I have also been considering artificial turf, but while I can see some pros for look at the early stages I am not sure it will be too good longer term given wear and tear and pets, not to mention possible damage by outside smokers.

It's better than wood chips and pebbles but weeds can still be a problem.
