China's March EV sales renew historical highs

China's new energy vehicle (NEV) production and sales set new monthly records in March, with numbers for pure-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles also at historical highs.
The country produced 216,000 NEVs in March, up by 250pc from a year earlier and by 74.2pc from February, according to China's automotive manufacturers association (CAAM). March sales totalled 226,000 vehicles, up by 240pc on the previous year and by 105.5pc from a month earlier.
Total NEV production during January-March was 535,000, up by 320pc from a year earlier, with sales up by 280pc to 515,000.
China's NEV market has been recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic since the second half of 2020, with the pace accelerated by supportive policies and stronger competition among domestic NEV manufacturers. The country's state council last year announced a development plan that aims for NEVs to account for 20pc of the country's total vehicles sales by 2035.
Chinese technology firm Xiaomi at the end of March announced its entry into the electric vehicle manufacturing industry. Chinese NEV producer BYD also reported higher production and sales of NEVs in March compared with a year earlier.
