Whilst Eric Zuesse has a good grasp of the broad understanding of the issues at stake, but this comment he made is dead wrong.

After the war has begun, Israel will come under rocket and missile attack from Iran’s proxies: Hamas in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Hamas is not an Iranian proxy force. There is no doubt in the past Hezbollah assisted Hamas when key leaders were exiled to Lebanon despite one being a Shia and another a Sunni organisation by providing assistance (mostly technical).

Hamas however has burn it's bridges with Hezbollah as a legitimate movement for liberation of Palestine when it's leadership completely sided with the head-choppers in Syria against the Syrian Government. The Syrians were understandably angry after all the work in championing the rights of the Palestinian cause only to have Hamas stab them in the back and try to overthrow them. Part of this is has been Hamas isn't really a legitimate popular force. It promotes and extremist interpretation of Islam that doesn't sit well with many Palestinians and has no broad appeal across the population. To Israeli intelligence credit they have successfully destroyed and penetrated much of their leadership with Qatar the main sponsor left with some Turkish support. Hamas tried to suck up to the Syrian government when they realised the tide had turned but these advances have been rejected. Hamas is no legitimate liberation force or capable force to significantly trouble Israel unlike Hezbollah. They are not good fighters but are good at terrorizing both Palestinian and Israeli civilians.

What should trouble Israel is what is happening in Syria with the real "Iranian Proxies". People have to remember the war of 2006 saw the might of Israel stopped by a significantly smaller force of Hezbollah that was its B-Grade team. Since 2006 Hezbollah has improved its armament, structure and its reserves let alone it's highly professional units that are all battle hardened from the conflict in Syria.

The important thing I should point out is that Hezbollah is openly training large formations of Palestinian units in Syria that have strong broad Palestinian community support. This is a genuine liberation force in the mold of Hezbollah. The are battle hardened, loyal, motivated, well structured and determined to win back their land. If Israel couldn't beat Hezbollah's small B grade team they will be overwhelmed with the larger more trained Palestinian formations with the battle easily in Israeli occupied territory. Zuesse has missed this as its a long-term game changer.
