    The reason I was interested is that it could shed light on what the US will do.

    From replies and google on these leads it seems likely that it is the FSA.

    My guess is that US may end up creating a safe haven in southern Syria for the FSA it is training and has influence over.

    I can't see them risking any overt action in Syria to punish Assad unless they can improve their strategic position.

    I am assuming they do not want Assad (Iran, Hezbollah, Russia) to win but also do not want him to fall quickly and lose control of his chemical stock or have alqeda take over. The latter is a bit of an assumption since it may be more complicated.
