Groundzero; by your reasoning we should have been hand in hand with the Japs in the 1980s? Trade partners change, grow and shrink & I'm not suggesting we anchor specifically to any trade partner on the basis of trade volume.
I'm talking about the ability to trade, we trade by sea and the US rules the sea. So apart from the similarities in lifestyle between Australia and the US; and the shared history of military campaigns we need them & we need to give them reason to aid us if any problems arise.
Put it this way I am much more comfortable having US military bases in Australia than a Chinese one no matter how much Iron Ore they buy.
