Following on from Hatch's enquiry, and including your use of the handset manufacturer providing the data, then of course it's only a matter of incorporating Dataflex into the operating system of the phone. That way a user can still have independence from the carrier, but bare the costs, when using their own preferred apps, yet take advantage of the sponsored data initially provided with the handset with the apps that come with the handset. Of course, the carrier can bring online new apps at anytime of which the user gains free access to, but also the user can do the same at her own cost. All this is possible because of the split billing functionality, which behind the scenes, is the CSP smart managing the data used from the different apps.
Such a system is one before a totally free data handset, as you mentioned.
