The story goes that the big buyer was accumulating enough shares to change the board. Once they had enough shares the buying stopped.

They then would have submitted their intentions to the company which in turn called for the trading halt. This would have taken a certain amount of time which no doubt affected the SP with daytraders getting out and stop/losses being triggered and with people panic selling.

It did look like it was halted to stop the SP from sliding but it was probably just coincidental.
