Jiji PressTAKAHAMA, Fukui (Jiji Press) — Yutaka Nose, mayor of Takahama, Fukui Prefecture, agreed Thursday to restart the No. 3 and No. 4 reactors at Kansai Electric Power Co.’s nuclear power plant in the town.

The town government accepts the restart, Nose said at a meeting of the local assembly.

Attention is shifting to decisions by Fukui Governor Issei Nishikawa and the Fukui prefectural assembly.

The Takahama town assembly in March gave its consent.

But the power supplier will not be able to resume the reactors unless the interim injunction against the restart issued by Fukui District Court in April is reversed.

Nose told reporters that his decision is a matter separate from the court injunction.
Speaking at the town assembly meeting, Nose said all requirements cited by him for the restart were met.
They included consent from the town assembly, the clarification of the central government’s nuclear power policy, the effectiveness of plant safety measures and the verification of resident evacuation plans.

Nose said he made the decision after carefully scrutinizing nuclear safety and disaster prevention measures at the Takahama plant.

In February, the reactors passed safety screenings by the Nuclear Regulation Authority.

Kansai Electric aims to restart the No. 3 reactor in late January next year and the No. 4 reactor in late February.

In a statement issued after the mayor’s approval, Kansai Electric said it will work hard to restart the reactors as early as possible while taking all possible measures to ensure safety and gaining understanding of residents and the general public.
