i too prefer drawing to be honest - getting colour is a trial for me but the piece i did the other day might have given me a way to solve the problem. there is a technique the koreans use to make paper behave like a textile with a lot of internal strength. I have been experimenting with it for a few years and this last work involved multicoloured tonal paper of a particular type, lots of water and smashing paper and then i used pastels on top of that. i was happy with the way that worked in general but think there is still opportunity to improve. it is also really the first piece i have done that is more abstract and not representational which is what drawing seems to produce. you are lucky if your daughter can draw - I hope she keeps drawing for you. Maybe she can do a series of miniature wild animals to hang together.
i have a theory we can all produce art of some sort but what stops us is self criticism - some need to produce to a particular standard or style and that gets in the way of the practice that is needed. I made a decision to stay on it and i can see the transition over time. ive thrown out a good few pieces though and am happy to have done so.
lol I have drawings my children did as youngsters. and still kept some of the artwork my youngest did for VCE art. (including some very large canvases. he was sort of out of step with his class though as he was interested in religious works. he produced one - i didn't keep it - which used a sheet, a large cross and marks on the shert to do an amazing representation of christ. he also did a garment to represent Lilith - must have been influenced by his mother - i still have it - well i think i do.

We decided to go out tomorrow now. Planning our day trips better.
I'm no artist, lol. Mine would be scary art if I ever tried. I think it's good you are so artistic and creative and encourage your children. There was a local artist where we used to live and she used to love my daughter crawling around in her home. Her upper floor was literally a gallery. She used to take my daughter's hand, dip it in paint and go 'swoosh' across the paper. The giggles from my daughter.
