I remember several speakers from the USA said that violence would increase as populations increased and that people would sell out their government for a pack of cigarettes which they also noted would rise in price.

It's the policies that would cause an economic downturn, like what we have here in Oz at the moment for example, 3 or 4 yrs of bad policies will have an impact imo.
