TC Alfred category 2 with winds to 130km/h is 425kms East of Brisbane moving WEST at 11km/h. The systems convection (rain) is increasing on the western and southern sides today which will continue.
He is currently forecast to impact the coast as a high end category 2 with destructive winds to 155km/h. Some data suggests he could intensify further to a category 3 (very destructive winds over 165km/h) just prior to landfall.
A coastal crossing remains LIKELY between Brisbane & the Gold Coast late Thursday early Friday which coincides with a high tide at this stage -
NOTE the exact crossing track & time may change slightly depending on changes in forecast data and live track data. DON'T focus on the centre of the system anyway LOOK at the red lines on the map - this is the current cyclone warning area!
So to be clear that is from Double Island Point to Grafton and ALL areas in between. Severe weather with heavy rain & damaging winds is also expected well inland to the ranges in SEQLD & NENSW.
Scattered gusty showers and rain bands starting today and increasing tomorrow across SEQLD & NENSW. Very heavy to extreme rainfall from late Thursday through Friday AND into Saturday. Widespread falls of 250-500mm east of the ranges from Sunshine Coast to Kempsey. Peak isolated falls over 750mm possible between Brisbane & Coffs Harbour. This rainfall is likely to cause significant flooding in some areas (more on that later).
Dangerous storm surge near the cyclones centre and near southern onshore wide side is expected along the coast causing inundation (flooding) of low lying areas.
Abnormally high tides also likely to cause minor coastal flooding of low lying areas between Sandy Cape and Grafton, especially on high tides.
This system has the potential to cause widespread power outages, many road closures with a significant disruption to travel and events. Schools & childcare may close.
