I think you need to look into the scientific definition of what they LABEL as GM. A lot of it is just a play on words to lead people astray and think things which are not entirely true.

A lot of the GM 'labelled' crops are not really genetically modified, they have not been developed in a lab and they are basically hybrids created through cross breeding to enhance certain characteristics, it's the same as when a black man and white couple have a kid you end up with a kid with a mix of characteristics, and thats what a lot of these labelled GM crops actually are.

Cross breeding happens naturally in the world and also with the help of humans, can be crops, flowers, cattle etc etc etc been going on for thousands of years and is really a process of evolution sped up.

However yes in labs they do still try and create fair dinkum GM plants.

Here in this link it says no GM wheat crops grown here, only 3 GM grown here, cotton, canola and safflower but i' haven't looked into whether they really are GM crops or just cross-bred hybrids. They also list the Banana example and this is more like an example of GM however they don't create the new genetics they get them from a wild banana strain so in this case they are still just using gentics provided by nature not man made ones to improve characteristics which is what a lot of people think GM means.
