Last night on the ABC news and on the ABC's "The Business", there was a item on re-cycling Lithium batteries. Worth a watch on catchup. This morning, I read an investor newsletter which discussed this further, they had some good observations (below). As we all know, VRFB's are not prone to catching fire. Vanadium for stationary batteries is a much safer bet !

"Last night I heard a report on the ABC about lithium battery recalls.
We all know that lithium batteries have the potential to catch fire. It is not something that happens everyday, but anyone who has been on a plane (yes, not for a while I know) will remember that airlines are a little cautious on lithium batteries. Battery maker LG Solutions has recalled around 5000 household batteries and Hyundai around 1000 car batteries as there are concerns that they may start a fire....
....For every EV or home battery, at some stage they will have to be recycled. They only have a lifespan of 5-10 years. The CSIRO projected the waste stream from EVs alone could reach 180,000 tonnes by 2036 in Australia. The problem is the electrolyte. It’s a nasty beast. It consists of flammable and combustible organic solvents in which a lithium salt is dissolved, which is not only corrosive and toxic but releases hydrofluoric acid when in contact with water. Yuk...."

I wasn't aware that HF can be produced in Lithium battery fires, but it is indeed the case, as described in this nature paper:

    All IMHO, DYOR
