Thanks for that...Taken over by whom do you think...?
Another issue in your post was the that of the skilled personnel shortage ...A problem for the mining and engineering sector here, in northern Europe and north America (everywhere really).
I admire what Visy has done. Visy, as i understand it, sponsors Tafe courses to meet its needs. I think they have one in Qld for one of its plastics (...?) plants. I think, it also has a graduate training program.
I know I am stating the obvious but share prices drop if drilling, construction etc is delayed because of personnel shortages or if labor costs are high (supply and demand). The big employer, corporate and professional groups APPEA, PESA, OGP, Minerals Council of Australia etc really need to get involved early in the education process..even with primary school students. As an industry we're not doing that at the moment...at most we're just sending out a few pamphlets every so often with the tuckshop notes. And then every so often we hear about some poor brave colleague who spoke to an utterly uninterested assembly of 15 year old high school students, completely ignorant about the Timor Sea, carbon trading, LNG, platinum, peak oil, surveys, geothermal energy, the late Permian period etc and who think Triassic and Jurassic were Steven Spielberg films etc .
