This video below says the company is seeking $3.7b or $7.50 per share (at today's share price, the company is valued at $3.5b).

Thursday's AFR says that when Street Talk first mentioned a takeover, WHC's shares were $5.40, and are now @ $7.15. This share is still going with the market, and on pullbacks, can fall to under $7.00, from what I've seen recently, so buying on dips could mean there's still 10% in it if a bid goes to $7.70.
As to timing, according to the AFR, non-binding bids were due last Wednesday, formal due diligence will now be taking place (site visits and the like), and binding bids are due in April. "A decision on whether to sell Whitehaven looks likely by the end of the financial year."
These things can take forever. :+/
