China: New environmental inspections due within three years
China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment has announced that a second round of central environmental inspections will be carried out in all provinces within the next three years, following far-reaching environmental reviews in mid-2017.
Roskill view: The first round of central inspections, launched in August 2017, led to closures across various supply chains in China, resulting in tighter supplies and higher prices for numerous commodities including tungsten, fluorspar, magnesia, calcium carbonate, cement, ceramics and fertilisers.
In some instances, global supply chains have been caught short, with importers of Chinese minerals and metals now looking for alternative sources of supply. The announcement of a second round of central environmental inspections is likely to see some companies look to diversify their import sources or potentially expand upstream to ensure security of supply.
