taking profits

Hi guys

First time poster and hope this is the right forum for this question. Be gentle with me.

If you were lucky enough to make a profit of say $5k on a $30k position and you wanted to take the 5k out in profit -would you sell only 5k worth of shares in your current position and keep the rest or
do you sell only those number of shares that made that profit? Hope this makes sense.
