Automotive industry has already been down this road. OBDII, EOBD had to brought in to control diagnostic costs as vehicle manufacturers would continuallty change connector design and protocol for scan tool communication.
As a side note, Holden blatently refused to adapt to OBDII and/or EOBD, therefore helped it's well deserved death.
