You can choose to sort by "New" or bookmark this: https://www.reddit.com/r/talga/new/. But yes, that still doesn't show the latest comments, just the latest posts.
Reddit was built more with news aggregation in mind, hence the tagline of being the "front page of the Internet." As opposed to being a discussion forum. The upside is that the community can vote which content floats to the top, so rubbish can get hidden. But the downside is anything that is worth reading, but may not toe the line, can also get hidden.
