The Taliban are really a creation of the CIA and the Pakistan ISI and only ruled in Afghanistan from 1996-2001. Like aL Qaeda in Iraq they have alienated many of their countrymen by their repression (no schooling etc) and barbaric cruelty, particularly toward their womenfolk.
When they first burst on to the scene (1996) they were welcomed as anti-corruption reformers but, if you like to google, you will find that that support was waning even before they were thrown out of government in 2001 by the US Coalition.
The Taliban may have some support amongst the villagers but it seems they are interlopers, educated in Pakistani madrssas and don't represent historic Afghani Muslim culture. That is why they are not universally accepted in Afghanistan. It gets most of its recruits from the Pashtun ethnic grouping.
Not sure about the bona fides of this person (blogspot is a US organisation ) who claims to be an Afghani and appears to be living in Afghanistan. However he probably represents the more educated Afghanis abhorrence of the medievalism of the Taliban. Here he gives advice to the NATO led forces on how to prevent civilian deaths when targeting the Taliban.
