"Tallow prices were about $10 to $32 per tonne higher in February (2007). The average price of 1% FFA tallow increased by $32 per tonne ex. works to $619. The average price of 2% FFA tallow was $567 per tonne ex. works, up $11 per tonne and the average price of 4% FFA tallow increased by $14 to $556 per tonne. The average price of meat meal increased by $9 per tonne to $404 per tonne ex. works. Blood meal prices were slightly higher at an average price of $584 per tonne.

Tallow prices continued to increase in February following the trends set by palm stearine and soy oil. Palm stearine increased by US$30 per tonne FOB Malaysia
in February. The price of palm stearine has increased by about US$170 per tonne in the last 12 months. The demand for vegetable oils is being encouraged by the interest in oils for renewable energy and a potential reduction in soy plantings in the USA in favour of corn to produce fuel alcohol. With the increasing price of palm there is good demand for tallow in China, Taiwan and Pakistan. With palm stearine remaining firm and competition from export markets and domestic users looking for tallow for oleochemical production and biodiesel, tallow prices should continue to be firm. There should be more supplies out of New Zealand in March and this could affect prices for 4% FFA tallow but in general tallow prices are expected to remain firm. "
