Coaldale mine proposals lodged
Ross Louthean ? 24 June 2011
The operating subsidiary Takitimu Coal, owned by active coal developer Bathurst Resources Ltd (ASX & NZX: BTU), plans to open up the Coaldale mine lease in western southland that the company says could generate significant revenue for the region.
A hearing in Invercargill this week was told that Takitimu Coal, which operates the sub bituminous coal mine of that name, has applied to both the Southland District Council and Environment Southland for resource consents for Coaldale, set to be an open cut mine north west of Nightcaps.
Company executive Craig Pitcher said the in-ground value of the coal was estimated at more than $80 million.
The pit development would employ regional industry and people and in the first year about 170,000 tonnes could be mined.
Based on known resources mining was expected to take up to six years but a consent was being sought for 10 years in case of delays.
The Southland Times said the proposal was largely well-supported within the community but some residents have voiced their opposition to the project, saying it could create extra noise, traffic and dust.
Bathurst acquired Takitimu, the regional permits and also the Cascade hard coking coal mine on the West Coast from Brisbane-based Galilee Energy on a multi-million dollar deal that was concluded early this year.
Bathurst itself is going through a consents hearing in Westport for its planned Escarpment coal mine in the Buller coalfield.
