    Just about everyone has missed the really important point.

    People are arguing about the actual bill itself, whereas I suggest that the elephant in the room is this;

    When the government sets upon wealthy taxpayers, they react. They are where they are, not by rolling over, but by taking affirmative action.

    So they will recoup what they regard as rightfully theirs. In other words, the savings to the budget may be much less than raw numbers suggest. A politican admitted today that proper modelling of just how many people will abandon private insurance and go on to Medicare has not been done. Like most government programs, carbon tax included, the deal has been done with an eye to vote winning, not economics.
