As for "loony" I think you will find a majority of the derogatory comments, demeaning peoples mental state, comes from the left. One poster in particular will mention "looney right" at least a dozen times per day, pathetic really.

As for rant, my opinion only, however, if there is a negative connotation to every post, leaning left or right, I consider it a rant. In your post I believe there was zero necessity to have a dig at Abbott, your last sentence was spot on and all that was necessary.
